Harvest Moon Field Trip

The Harvest Moon Society (HMS) is a volunteer-driven educational charity focused on regenerative agriculture, sustainable food systems, and environmental stewardship. Operating under the motto “Healthy Land, Healthy Communities”, the organization has spent the past 20+ years transforming the former Clearwater School into the Harvest Moon Learning Center (HMLC) where we offer year-round experiential educational opportunities. The HMLC contains a commercial kitchen, greenhouse, “Secret” Garden, and four dorm rooms among many other features.

On Friday, June 9 we’d like to invite homeschool families to Clearwater, MB for a Harvest Moon Field Trip. Our Education Committee along with our Education Liaison and Land Based Learning Interpreter have planned out a day of programming (10am – 4pm) that includes garden and greenhouse tours, a guided hike on our Lessons from the Land nature trail, and some educational activities centered around native tree species identification and learning about the role of Riparian zones in our prairie ecosystem. The activities will be geared toward students aged 12+, but siblings and parents are welcome to take part as well. There will be a cost of $10 per student or $25 per family. Overnight accommodations can be arranged for RVs/trailers or tents, and we have the dorm rooms available as well (each room has a bunk bed that would sleep two on the bottom and one on the top).

There are two homeschool parents on the HMS Education Committee (Wendy Pearson and Jennifer deGroot) and Wendy has agreed to organize carpooling. Anyone looking to carpool can reach out to Wendy at [email protected].

Registration is limited to about 25 students. To register, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Other attractions in the area (in case you’d like to make a trip of it) include Spruce Woods Provincial Park (about an hour north), Pembina Valley Provincial Park (about an hour east), Turtle Mountain Provincial Park (about an hour west), as well as the communities of Crystal City and Pilot Mound (10 and 20 minutes east).

We hope to see you in June.

Sincerely,
Dustin Mymko
